Our doe pen; the girls love their umbrella for shade!
Health and Management
Feed - We feed our girls Blue Seal Dairy Pellets except when they are on the milk stand, where they get whole grains such as oats and barley too. Our boys get Blue Seal medicated meat goat pellets to prevent any urinary calculi issues, which are common in males.
Water - Fresh buckets of spring water are available at all times; cold in summer and warm in winter if possible. The boys also get apple cider vinegar in their water...again to avoid UT issues.
Housing - Thanks to our amazing volunteer, Adrienne Brown, our housing is cleaned weekly. We start with a fresh bed of shavings, but before long the floor is covered with hay too. If it becomes too dirty or damp, we add a layer of hay so they are always dry and comfortable.
Vaccinations - All pregnant does receive BoSe and CD&T before 4-6 weeks before kidding. All kids receive BoSe at 1 and 6 weeks and CD&T at 10 and 12 weeks.
Testing - Our herd has been fully tested for all major goat diseases (Johnnes, CL, CAE, Bruccellosis). Because we are a licensed diary our test results are on file with the State of Maine. We maintain a closed herd, so no additional animals have been added in years. If they are in the future, they will be quarantined and fully tested before being allowed near other goats.
Breeding - All does are bred annually to our own bucks to ensure a continued milk supply. A few kids are retained but the majority are sold annually.
Occasionally we get them a round bale of hay for a special treat.....
