Why Nigerian Dwarf Goats?
After researching many different breeds, we selected Nigeran Dwarf Goats for the following reasons:
- Their small size - this makes it very easy to handle and transport (a large dog carrier is more than adequate for 1-2 goats). In addition, Nigeran Dwarf Goats require less space to house and pasture, which being a micro dairy is an issue always on our minds. Their size also makes them much less intimidating - having never handled livestock, milked, trimmed hooves, or cared for this type of animal, we were afraid a larger breed might bite, kick or otherwise be too aggressive for us to handle.
- Their looks - we find this breed particulary pleasing to look at and they come in a wide variety of colors and patterns.
- Their temperament and personality - Nigerian Dwarf Goats are sweet and affectionate and each has a distinct personality. A real plus!
- The quality of their milk - goat milk is naturally homogenized, and the milk of Nigerian Dwarfs is very high in butterfat, which leads to tastier products (milk, cheese, yogurt, and butter). Nigerian Dwarfs' milk never develops a "goaty" flavor like the milk of some other goat breeds.
